Luscious Lashes

Updated: Oct 11, 2020

Never before have lashes had so much attention - if we have to wear a mask everywhere then the only bit of your face visible are your eyes so we've got to make them stand out! Without saying a word, your eyes can tell someone you love them or tell them to Foxtrot Oscar.

There are so many options for getting your lashes looking "on fleek" (I'm sorry, who am I? I don't really know what that means. I think it just means "good") so you don't have to go the extensions route every time. Lashes can be as high maintenance as you want them to be and it really depends on the look you want.

Here I will explain the different eyelash treatments on offer and the maintenance to go with them. All of them will enhance your already beautiful eyes and make you feel like you've made an effort - although when your lashes are done your morning routine is about 2 minutes so it's worth it just for an extra 10 minutes in bed.

Faking It

Lash extensions are by far the most popular treatment I do at the moment and they are really fun to do. In just a couple of hours your lashes are completely transformed to be as dramatic as you want - lashes are longer and curlier and grow out with the natural hair. They are the most high maintenance of all the lash treatments but they are the ones with the best, most instant results.

The 3 types I do are:

Classic Lashes: Individual synthetic lashes applied to an individual hair. Approximately 100 lashes are put on each eye and this creates a natural but full lash look.

Russian Lashes: A cluster of individual synthetic lashes made into a fan with a small base. These are applied to the individual hair and create a more volume look. They can range from 2 to 10 hairs on one fan. This is a more dramatic look and gives a fluffier appearance.

Hybrid lashes: These are a mixture of classic individual and Russian lashes. They are an inbetween lash for people who want a more natural look but with a bit more volume.

Express Lashes: This is a quick treatment for a one off special occasion. They give an instant, full, thick lash result and are a great option if you don't like the faff of applying strip lashes before an event. They are placed on your lash line so not on an individual hair and because of this they must be removed after 2-3 weeks or you will damage your lashes as they grow out.

Lash Extension Maintenance

  • Do not get them wet for 24-48 hours after treatment

  • No sauna/steam room for 24-48 hours after treatment

  • Do not use any product that contains oil on your eyes

  • Do not pick your lashes or excessively rub your eyes

  • Try to sleep on your back if you can or at least swap sides every night

  • In fills are typically every 3 weeks

  • Brush your lashes every day and clean them regularly with lash cleanser

Just A Little Lift

A lash lift and tint is the new name for an old school perm but while the perm used curlers to curl your lashes around, the lash lift uses a silicone sheild to stick your lashes up and then lifts them from the base. The solution is applied to the roots of your lashes and is usually just enough to make you realise that you do have gorgeous, natural lashes - you just couldn't see them.

This treatment takes about an hour and the results last until your new lashes grow through - which will be your natural hair colour and curl - usually 6-8 weeks.

It's a great treatment and surprisingly dramatic when you see your natural lashes living to their full potential.

Lift and Tint Maintenance

  • Do not get them wet for the first 24 hours

  • Swimming, saunas and harsh products will weaken the lift

  • Do not use eyelash curlers

  • Do not rub your eyes or sleep on your face

  • Avoid waterproof mascara

The Natural Look

So if you are not feeling the love for either of those treatments and just want a bit of a boost for your lashes then a revitalising serum is the way forward. Serums claim to make your lashes longer, fuller and voluminous in just 25 days (although the full results can take up to 12 weeks to be seen) and only requires you to apply the product once a day before bed. Easy.

I'm using UKLash growth serum on my lashes and so far I like it. It's cruelty free, vegan, paraben and fragrance free and also oil free so you can use it while having extenions to nourish your natural lashes and prevent damage. If you use code WELCOME10 you get 10% off your first order and it's free delivery too - winner. They also give you your money back if you haven't seen any results in 12 weeks so definitely worth a punt. I paid £34.20 for a 3ml tube (6 month supply) and compared to Revitalash at £125 it was a no brainer.

Mascara

I've been on the quest for the perfect mascara for as long as I can remember and God only knows how much money I've wasted. They are all just so rubbish and never do as the adverts say. It also really grinds my gears when you read the small print on the advert that usually says "styled with lash inserts" so basically they are lying to you. Plus my eyes are - and I quote - "like piss holes in the snow". Thanks mum. So any mascara I use indefinitely ends up smeared all over my eyelid and my husband never seems to think that's something he should mention to me during the day. The only one I've found to be any good is No7 Stay Perfect Mascara. It goes on like a normal mascara but it comes off in clumps when you remove it. It's a bit weird to explain but it honestly does not smudge. I did the Fleet Half Marathon wearing it and I can confirm it stayed put through all the sweat and the tears. I did not enjoy that day but at least my eyes looked good.

Plus you remove it with water on a cotton pad so its great to use alongside a lash lift if you want a little more oomph.

Hair Vitamins

I've used hair vitamins and I think they work. My lashes were good and the hair on my head was growing well. I went from a short, graduated bob to below shoulder length hair in a year while taking them but the only problem is they make ALL your hair grow. So if you've got a little fuzz on your upper lip or a few (ok, maybe more than a few) stray hairs on your chin then prepare for those bad boys to go into overdrive. My husband thought I was hatching an evil plan with the amount of time I spent twiddling my beard. So you weigh up the pros and cons - it's just not worth it for my self esteem.

I used Hair Burst hair vitamins - at Holland & Barrett they are usually on a buy one get one 1/2 price or in their Penny Sale sometimes.

So keep those lashes looking on fleek ladies!
